The Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) was intended to increase the security of mobile phone communications from unauthorised tracking of users and tapping of their conversations. Law enforcement authorities may nevertheless wish to break through the security thus provided in order to track the movement of telephones and their owners. This case is about a patent for a method of breaking through the GSM security so that the identification numbers of a mobile telephone and its user can be obtained.
